Celebrating Life and Hope
Every once in a while you are offered an opportunity to be part of something magical and transformative. We have had that privilege and want to invite you to join us in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Students from WHS and I have had the privilege of being part of a program through the Holocaust Resource Center in New London, titled Encountering Survivors. Through this program, students travel to a Holocaust survivor’s home for a series of three interviews. The first interview is life before WWII, the second interview is about their life during the war and the third interview is about life after the war. Our Holocaust survivor’s name is Lola Fox. My students have been traveling to Lola’s home to interview her. After the interviews, they were so moved, that when they returned to school, they shared Lola’s stories with other students. These stories have changed us and we have all fallen in love with Lola.
Through this program we also met Holocaust survivor Henny Simon, and Ben Cooper, a US veteran who liberated one of the concentration camps. Henny and Ben have agreed to join us not only to hold a special event to honor Lola, but to raise money for one of our fellow students, Alberto Cruz. Alberto, who suffered a neck injury at the beach, is now paralyzed from the shoulders down. His family is in need of a handicap accessible van and we are on a mission to raise the money to purchase the van. All money raised will go to their family.
Please join us as we honor Lola, Henny, Ben and Alberto. It is an evening to celebrate the power of hope.
Come hear first-hand their experiences, so that we never forget the need for tolerance and kindness and we remember the power of HOPE.
The event will be hosted by Young Poet Sacha Gomez. We have 10 center front row seats that are available to the public with a $100 minimum donation. Center rows 2-5 are available to the public for a $50 donation. All other tickets are $1.00. Donations will be gratefully accepted.
